Among the peculiarities gifted to me by my keratoconus—the eye disease that has distorted my corneas and required three transplants—is the inability to see the edges of steps. Going down, all steps look like a sliding board! It means that I have to employ the tried and true method of touching the back of my heel to each step to prevent falling as I hang onto the railing!
It’s a tricky maneuver when you’re rushing down steps with busy commuters!
