I started my academic career as the story hour lady at the local library. After getting my certification as a public librarian, I went on to obtain a teaching degree in Elementary Education, an MEd in Reading K-12, and an EdD in Educational Leadership. I once told the director that by mentoring me, she’d created an education junkie. But there’s nothing like going back to your roots. I’ve taught, in order, middle school, elementary school, middle school again, college, post-college, and high school.
My daughter, Bonnie, works at a Jewish preschool, and she’s suggested that I might like to come in as the school Bubbe (grandmother) and read to the children once a month or so. It will bring my teaching career full circle and seems a satisfying place to end.
Where did you begin your career? Would you go back?
There’re not many things in those world more satisfying than “being a Bubbe.”
I wrote a Christmas monologue and performed it as “Bubbe Abernathy”
One year, I even received a donation to my favorite charity for the effort!
May the Lord bless your future Bubbe days! Kat
I ended my teaching career in 2016. Last week I participated in the Read Across America event by returning to my school. It was a wonderful experience to be back on campus, back in the neighborhood and see a few familiar faces.
