It’s not like I haven’t done it before. Years ago, Ron and I both joined a group at our church who pledged to read the Bible through in a year. We did it and got a certificate for doing so. But that was before full time teaching and caregiving took over my waking hours. So, as I ease into retirement, I want to read the Holy Bible all the way through again. This time, I plan to journal as I go. I’ve even purchased some nifty pens and markers.
Bible journaling is a unique way to make a personal connection to Scripture. Typically, drawings and notes are made directly in the Bible. People who don’t feel comfortable doing that might choose to use a separate journal.
“Bible journaling is all about reading and studying the Word, letting it lead you to be creative in the ways you memorize and record Scripture,” Laurel Keller, an avid journaler and artist, said. “The goal with Bible journaling is to experience God’s Word in a new way as you spend time with the Lord.”
There are several reasons people might choose to “Bible Journal.”
Improve your focus, memory, and analytical skills when studying the Bible.
Connect your faith to everyday life.
Streamline your prayers.
Make sense of the things that happen in your life as you pray, meditate, and use what you learn from studying the Bible to improve your life experiences.
Actively taking down notes can help you take action and become more proactive about changing your life for the better.
Bible journaling is an exciting way to engage with Scripture and transform the way you spend time in the Word.
This sounds much more personal than the way Ron and I completed the Bible in a year, actually reading the Book of Revelation during the Watch Night service!
My wonderful grandmother always told me that since the Bible was a sacred book, one should not write in it. I’ve needed to overcome my reluctance!
How do you feel about writing in The Bible or in any book?
I love it when a memorial service of a Christian includes a display of her Bible filled with highlights and personal notes in the margin.
My mother is deceased, so my Bible was her Bible. She wrote in it and underlined in it lots. I love seeing what she highlighted and wrote in the margins.
