“What was that announcement? What did they say?” The announcements at school are supposed to come over the phone speaker, but the one in my room has never, ever worked. Most of the time, announcements aren’t crucial but when you’re waiting to hear if the predicted inclement weather will result in a school closure tomorrow, it would be really nice to hear!
Instead of clarity, though, my room gets static. An announcement might sound like this:
“Would…please…see…at…”
That’s when I need to text a colleague with, “What did that announcement say?”
And it’s not just the lack of information, but the static that can interrupt a lesson that is going quite well. It’s pretty hard to get teenagers back on track!
I do understand that some announcements are important and need to interrupt the school day. I kind of wonder, though, what “important information” I’ve missed in the last seven years.
