“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
— Galatians 6:9
When It’s All Over... or Just Beginning?
It was over.
The older kids had gone home, back to their routines. Allen had dashed upstairs—his suit jacket and tie abandoned like breadcrumbs on the stairs.
And suddenly, I was alone.
What do you do when the long road finally ends? After nineteen years of caregiving, juggling multiple jobs, and enduring one medical crisis after another, I didn’t know what to do with myself.
I wandered into the kitchen and made tea—though it was far too hot for tea. I just needed something to do.
Ron’s body was now at Lawncroft Cemetery.
But his spirit had returned home.
🟨 “Thank God,” I whispered. “It is finished.”
Seeds, Dirt, and Due Seasons
“As long as the earth endures… seedtime and harvest… will never cease.”
— Genesis 8:22
Scripture tells us that God has a rhythm: seedtime and harvest, grieving and rejoicing, winter and summer. Each one arrives in due time.
My caregiving season ended abruptly, but I soon found myself stepping into others I’d never imagined:
✍️ Writing about faith.
📚 Publishing a book.
🎙️ Speaking in churches.
All these things were still buried in the soil of my life, waiting for their moment to grow.
Growing Pains: A Church in Transition
With Pastor Amy’s retirement, Atonement Methodist Church is also entering a new season. And as Pastor Nana reminded us Sunday, growth isn’t always graceful.
It starts underground.
It’s dark.
It’s messy.
And frankly—it stinks.
A seed goes into the ground and disappears. Covered in dirt, it decays. Forgotten. But that’s not the end.
🟨 “Much of growth happens underground,” Pastor Nana said. “It involves death.”
But in that dark place, God begins something new. The seed germinates. It stirs. One small green shoot breaks through the soil, reaching toward the light. And from what once looked dead—comes life.
Fruit From the Dirt
Growth is rarely neat or tidy. But if the seed is planted in good soil (Matthew 13:3), it will bear fruit.
🟨 “From loss, He brings purpose. From a buried seed, He brings fruit.”
So, what fruit is God growing in you?
And what new harvest is He preparing for Atonement Church?
Atonement is good ground.
We will grow.
Take It With You
🔍 Reflect:
What part of your life feels buried right now?
Is there something God is quietly growing in the dark?
🌱 Act:
Encourage a fellow church member this week—you never know what seed that might plant.
Offer your time or talents in this new season of church life.
🕊️ Closing Prayer
Lord of the Harvest,
Sometimes life feels like dirt and mess and waiting.
Remind us that You’re always working, even when we can’t see it.
Help us to trust Your timing, stay rooted in faith, and not give up.
Grow something beautiful in us—one green shoot at a time.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
