God Bless you Linda. A “meltdown” is like having a mini Tornadocane, or should I say Hurnado tear through the interior of your home. I have found that setting time aside to ask a lot of questions to start conversation works to relieve frustrations. Starting with things as innocuous as “what’s the weather like outside,” or “ How was your day?”, Or “ How are your classes?”, and then committing to long sessions of listening to detailed descriptions of minutia, and parts… Not whole… Of concepts. This will not stop a spectrum hurnado once it has started, but it helps to stave them off.

These are excellent tips! My son and I have both become better at warding off melt-downs, but as you say, the force is unstoppable once it has started. It is NOT, as some point out, a tantrum. The person having the meltdown has lost control!
