West Catholic Preparatory High School in Philadelphia, where I teach, was built in 1916 and began as a Boys’ School. It is a wonderful old building with a stone facade and beautiful statues. But it’s not necessarily eco-friendly. My room sits over the kitchen so my students and I can tell what’s for lunch long before we descend to the cafeteria.
There is an ancient air conditioner in the room, which is a real blessing. But during the winter, there is no good way to control the heat that exudes from the hot water pipe running up from the kitchen. Add twelve or fourteen teenage bodies to a room that’s about 20 feet by 20 feet and there’s bound to be complaints about the heat.
I keep the overhead fan running even on bitter-cold days!
Like Leonard Hoffstedder in The Big Bang Theory, I’ll enjoy controlling my own thermostat!
I’m a January baby and I’m ALWAYS cold. How about you?
Good morning,
January is my birth month also. 🤪
Linda, I taught at West Catholic Girls for 15 years - West Prep is the former girls school. My room was 208! It was warm. I've been reading Quirky for a while. My son, John, is on the spectrum and is 40 yrs. old. It's been quite the journey. He lives independently now and is a college graduate.
He suffered thru hair cuts for a long time. Even though my father was a barber it was always hard since the clipper noise scared him and his sensory issues made it hard for him to sit still. He's come a long way. Now he gets his own hair cuts and keep his hair really short.
Thanks for sharing your experiences. I was a single Mom from the time my boys were 9 and 4.
