If you’re a Baby Boomer, like me, you probably remember listening to the radio on a winter morning, crossing your fingers that your school number would be announced and there would be that most wonderous of all winter events, THE SNOW DAY! With Zoom and other online learning tools now making true snow days a thing of the past, it is still nice to know I can teach from home and wear my slippers if weather conditions make travel hazardous.
But even sitting in my office, sipping cocoa and watching the snowflakes fall outside my window while I try to engage sleepy students in reading Silas Marner, cannot compete with the excitement of a true SNOW DAY, the surprise gift of 24 hours with no plans and responsibilities.
For those of you who have to travel to work no matter what the weather, you are hereby forewarned that at the slightest sign of a snowflake, I will wear my pajamas backwards and light my snow candle, a sure-fire way—according to my students—to bring on a snow day.
What’s a snowy day activity you enjoy? Did you, like me, listen to the radio for your school number?
Where I live in California we have zero snow days. What was nice about that when I was a teacher, was I knew exactly when my last day of the school year would be. From the first day until the 180th, I could plan my academic year.
Yes I listened to the radio for my school’s name actually ! But then we got dressed in warm clothes and went sledding on the local hills. Great fun. Loved no school days!
